Security tightened on Beijing subway
Starting from the end of June, all passengers taking the Beijing subway will have to pass through security checks by machines, dogs or police officers at all operational stations, CRI writes.
Beijing's subway system, which can carry as many as 4 million passengers daily, is one of the busiest in the world. Up till now, Dongzhimen station in eastern Beijing along Line 2 has been the only one installed with security equipment, CRI writes.
The security measures also require passengers to take a sip of bottled water or other beverages they carry into the subway if security machines and police dogs fail to identify them, CRI cites a police officer as saying.
A tips hotline 008610-64011327 has also been set up for callers who might have information regarding people bringing dangerous substances into the subway.
Beijing's busiest bus stations will also be installed with security machines.
People found carrying dangerous substances on board public transport can be jailed for five to 15 days, according to CRI. In the first four months of this year, 44 people were arrested, but no accidents occurred.
